Tingling In Hand

What You May Not Know About That Tingling In Your Hand

That tingling in your hand is not something that can be easily diagnosed.  This is a condition that can be from so many different things that one has to go through a lot of testing and trial and error sometimes just to pin point what the root of the problem is.  The simplest reason in some people is just the cold weather. When the temperatures drop, the arteries narrow in your fingers and hands and this can prevent a good solid blood supply from getting to your finger tips.  This of course is easily remedied by wearing a pair of warm gloves in the winter.  Another few common causes are staying in the same position for a long time whether that be sitting or standing.  Both can be the culprit.

If the tingling in your hand is not simply from cold weather there is a large spectrum of other causes.  Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a very popular cause and is acquired from doing the same hand movements over and over again and often.  Many people that develop this are factory workers doing assembly work and any other job that requires pinching or gripping.  Some hobbies such as needlework, golfing and even doing a lot of gardening can be the cause.

Multiple Sclerosis is another much more serious cause.  It is essential to get diagnosis of this in early stages so that exercises to maintain muscle tone can be done.  You will also need to rest it and practice relaxation techniques to build your energy level and also, avoid extreme temperatures.

Diabetes could be another huge cause for that tingling in your hand.  Your doctor can help you to control your blood sugar.  Some medication can cause tingling but through trial and error the medication can be tweaked to get this under control.

Vitamin B-12 deficiency is popular in the list of causes.  This is however the easiest diagnosis to remedy by taking Vitamin B-12 supplements.  Other causes in this category can be abnormal levels of calcium, potassium or sodium in your diet and possibly an underactive thyroid.

In addition to these, having a nerve injury in your neck or having spinal nerve pressure from a herniated disk can be a cause.  You can also have nerve damage from lead, alcohol or tobacco.  Shingles or herpes are another cause but a little less popular as well as radiation therapy.  Other more serious reasons can be seizures or mini-strokes.

Acupuncture can sometimes help relieve the pain and numbness as well as stretching out your wrists.  By putting both hands palm down on the ground and then completely stretching them out the other way with the back of your hands on the ground will completely stretch this area.  Massage is also helpful.  Rub the inside of your wrist with your thumb or if you can get someone else to help you out, two thumbs is always better than one.

If you‘re suffering from symptoms you should always consult your physician but you do a few things at home to help prevent or reduce the numbness.  Avoid sleeping with your hand under your head or pillow.  When possible, keep the wrist elevated on a pillow while you sleep or watch television.  Wearing a brace can be effective during your relaxation time too because it keeps the wrist straight instead of  in a bent position you may ultimately end up in that will only irritate the situation.  Also, avoid using twisting objects like screwdrivers and don’t rest your elbows on the table or desk for too long.  For every cause for tingling in your hand there is also a solution so consult your doctor if it continues.
